PORT KEMBLA AND THE ENVIRONMENT
Port Kembla Port Corporation works in partnership with port users, regulators and the local community to protect the environment and promote sustainable operations within the port. The Corporation’s commitment is clearly expressed in its Environmental Policy Statement (click on pdf link below).
Environmental features of the port and its surrounds include:
- Habitat for the endangered Green and Golden Bell Frog (Litoria aurea)
- A wide variety of marine and shore birds
- The Tom Thumb Lagoon wetland with its mangroves, coastal saltmarsh and native revegetation areas
- The Five Islands Nature Reserve provides valuable offshore breeding sites for marine birds.
The Port of Port Kembla operates with strong community support. The amenity of nearby residents is protected by buffer zones of industrial/commercial land and green space which surround the port. Good road and rail links minimise the transport impacts of moving cargo to and from the port.
